Wizards

Wizards in Normal Places is a collaborative project in Illustration I that introduces students to illustration as a shared system rather than an isolated outcome. As a class, students brainstormed potential themes and collectively selected wizards in normal places” as the concept for the book.

Each student illustrated one interior coloring page using a monoline, outline-based approach appropriate for coloring books. Working without color challenged students to communicate ideas clearly through line, composition, and visual storytelling alone. Within the shared theme, students interpreted what a “normal place” might be and designed a scene that fit both their personal style and the collective tone of the book.

In addition to contributing an interior page, each student designed a cover and back cover for the book. While these designs did not need to include every class illustration, students were asked to consider the work of their peers when making design decisions so the cover represented the spirit of the full collection rather than a single page. This encouraged editorial thinking, collaboration, and an awareness of audience beyond the individual maker.

The project also emphasized production and craft. Students learned how to prepare files for booklet printing, manage pagination, and assemble a finished publication through trimming and binding. The final result was a fully printed and assembled class coloring book that each student took home, reinforcing the value of collaboration, accessibility, and illustration made for participation and sharing.
