Main Character
Main Character is an illustration project focused on character development, emotional expression, and visual consistency. Students began by researching themselves as subjects, observing their own habits, poses, and emotional responses, and gathering reference images. This self-directed research was paired with visual studies of illustrated characters across children’s books, comics, and contemporary illustration to better understand how emotion and personality are communicated through exaggeration, gesture, and facial expression.
Students illustrated four distinct facial emotions and four full-body poses based on activities meaningful to them. The project emphasized maintaining consistency across multiple drawings of the same character while allowing for variation in expression and movement. Through this process, students developed skills in character design, emotional storytelling, and visual continuity, learning how illustration can communicate identity, mood, and personality without relying on text.
